In a mathematical description of a circuit, L stands for inductance.
An inductor is a device that stores energy in the form of a magnetic field. It is essentially a coil of wire that generates a changing magnetic field when the amount of current flowing through it changes. The changing magnetic field then produces an electromotive force that induces more current to flow through the device. The result is a storing of energy in the magnetic field.
